East Troy All-Alumni Reunion East Troy, Wisconsin Summer 1999 We've been told that we can't (ever) go home again. Neighborhoods change, people change, families experience new births and death. Life moves on. Despite these truths we still yearn to come home to the places which shaped us and gave us direction. Divine Word Seminary in East Troy, Wisconsin is such a place. On June 26, 1999 Br. Bernie Scherger welcomed the 5th Annual DWS--East Troy All-Alumni Reunion to the shores of Lake Beulah. He generously gave us use of the lakefront, boathouse, pontoon boat, and the front hill for those who camped overnight. Thanks Br. Bern! Seventeen alumni attended this year, many with spouses, kids, and even parents. Unlike the previous year, the weather was very favorable. The Wisconsin State Bird (the mosquito) even took the day off! Two picnic tables close to shore were the place of much conversation. Despite the quick passage of time, we resumed our stories of the past and shared where we are today. So many families have grown! Swimmers and two paddle boats were busy in the shallow end of the docks, while Lenny Uhal gave long and relaxing pontoon tours of our old stomping grounds. Horseshoes were attempted, but lost out to conversation. The Saturday evening highlight was Mass in the boathouse, celebrated by Fr. Sam Cunningham, SVD (East Troy '71). Again we shared stories about the value of friendship, family and the importance of community. It was touching how our children listened and participated. Another highlight (giving Fr. Sam some tough competition) was the pilgrimage to John Lauber's Old Fashion Soda Fountain for Green River drinks and the huge triple-chocolate "Divine Word" sundae. Not everyone was so brave! We didn't have a theme for the day, although many of us felt it. Spirit! It was the name of our yearbook. It is what calls us back each year. Some of us became SVDs, and some did not; but we all know the success of the school. We see it in our families and what we bring to our local churches and communities. No, we can't go (back) home, but we can recharge the spirit in our fellowship! See you next year! Attendees:
