17 Brave the Weather to Golf

        The forecast was for "partly cloudy skies." That was true for the morning. With a gray, gloomy sky, the rain held off until it was time for the first group of golfers to tee off at about 1:30. But only lighting prevents die-hard golfers from enjoying a round on the rolling greens..

        Seventeen alumni, including three SVDs, enjoyed nine holes of golf during the first-ever alumni golf outing at Willowhill Golf Course (across the street from Techny). While the sun never did shine that day, the rain let up in time for the last foursome to tee off with a dry start. The scores might not have been what they could have been, but all in all, it was an enjoyable day on the links. And remember, "A bad round of golf is better than a good day in the office!"

        Afterward, the 17 golfers were joined by 14 others for a steak fry on the picnic grounds of Divine Word Seminary at Techny. Luckily, the rain continued to hold off, and a good day was capped off with a great meal.

        Winners were Jim Hannon (East Troy '66/Epworth 1966-68) and Pete Smyczak (East Troy '66) with an average score of 41, 7 over par. With a 13 over par 47, the team of Rick Copallelo (East Troy 1973-74) and Dan Hourihane (Techny '60) took second place. Flag Event winners included Andy Devery for longest putt (hole 2), George Andrikokus for closest to the pin on the drive (hole 3), Len Uhal for closest to the pin on the drive (hole 5), Jim Palm for closest to the pin, on the 2nd shot (hole 7), and Dan Hourihane for longest drive (hole 9).
