Fr. Robert J. Flinn, SVD, died in June of 1995. He was an accomplished educator, author, canon lawyer, and medical ethicist. Those who knew him and loved him saw him as friendly and approachable, almost belying his powerful intellect and notable accomplishments.

Father Bob possessed a particular interest and loyalty for Divine Word College – the only Catholic College in our nation dedicated to preparing young men to become missionary priests and brothers. His service as a Divine Word College Trustee in the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s speaks to his devotion to this institution and its very special mission.

This scholarship was initially endowed at the $100,000 level, and presently stands at $154,727. If the fund continues to increase as a result of additional gifts, a greater number of Divine Word College students will benefit from the Flinn Scholarship each academic year.

Bishop Curtis Guillory is a 1968 graduate of Divine Word College and currently serves as Bishop of Beaumont, TX. He is an African-American priest who previously served as Auxiliary Bishop in the Diocese of Galveston-Houston. Bishop Guillory appreciates the educational opportunity provided him at Divine Word College. Divine Word College is, in turn, proud of his achievements.

Endowing a scholarship in honor of Bishop Guillory was a goal of many of his classmates at the College. This scholarship was recently endowed at the level of $100,000, 83% of which was gifted by Divine Word College alumni. The fund presently stands at $135,758; as additional gifts are received a greater number of DWC students each year will benefit from this special scholarship.

The Father Francis Kamp, SVD, and
Father Chester Nowicki, SVD, Scholarship
A gift of $54,000 is the foundation of what will become an additional named scholarship, or scholarships at Divine Word College. This gift provided by the Chicago Province of the Society of the Divine Word represents the proceeds of a special scholarship dinner held in September, 2003, honoring Fr. Francis Kamp, SVD, and Fr. Chester Nowicki, SVD. Support from many friends and benefactors recognizing these two Divine Word Missionaries made the $54,000 gift possible.

Fr. Kamp professed final vows and was ordained in 1947 and has held many important positions over the years. He began his priestly ministry as a professor at the minor seminary in East Troy, Wis. He edited The Little Missionary magazine and then became director of Divine Word Publications. For many years he was the Mission Director promoting interest in the overseas missions and raising funds to support the efforts of the Society in some of the poorest countries of the world. In 1985, when most people his age were retiring, Fr. Kamp became the Director of the Techny Land Committee, overseeing the sale and leasing of property that is no longer farmed by the Society.

Fr. Nowicki, following his final vows and ordination in 1946, served as Dean of Students at Divine Word Seminary in East Troy, Wis. He then held a similar position at the Brother Candidates School at Techny. He continued his ministry to seminarians as rector at Techny and also Conesus, N.Y. and Girard, Pa. He was assigned to the Chicago Province Treasurer’s Office in 1970 and remained there for 26 years. Now retired, he continues to share his expertise in many ways with members of the Chicago Province and the Society of the Divine Word throughout the world.

Divine Word College is building upon the initial gift of $50,000 through the generosity of friends and benefactors. The fund presently stands at $87,554. Our goal is to endow the Kamp-Nowicki Scholarship at the $100,000 level. Friends of Fr. Kamp, Fr. Nowicki, and Divine Word College are invited to join us in this effort.
