"Mary, Mother of Refugees" Sculpture

We have explored the establishment of a sculpture, expressive of the ideals of Divine Word College, in the open circle in the driveway before our main entrance. We envision a sculpture of the Blessed Virgin Mary as protectress of all those who have suffered the plight of the refugee. Mary, herself a refugee to Egypt with the Child Jesus, sympathizes with those uprooted from family and homeland. It is appropriate to turn to her for encouragement and strength as one endures the immigration and refugee experience. The figure should be maternal: strong, protective, and loving. She is reaching down to rescue, to protect, to uplift, somehow reflecting that she is a universal figure not captured by any single culture. The sculpture will be the focal point for all that come to our front entrance, and will assist in visibly defining Divine Word College to the public as a caring and loving institution.
