In 1875, St. Arnold Janssen founded the Society of the Divine Word (SVD), a group of Brothers and priests who minister to God's people around the world. (See our History) It did not take Arnold long to realize that the missionary men could be greatly assisted in their ministry by the service of religious women. Therefore, in 1889 along with Blessed Helena Stollenwerk and Hendrina Stenmanns (Mother Maria and Mother Josepha as their religious names), Arnold founded the Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters (SSpS). In time, Arnold also came to believe that another religious group was necessary. The members of this community would spend their lives in dedicated service to the Church by praying unceasingly. The Holy Spirit Adoration Sisters (SSpSAP) were founded in 1896 as a cloistered group whose lives center on the Eucharist.

The Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters (SSpS) are an international community of women, nearly 4,000 worldwide, called to witness to the power and the presence of the Holy Spirit through a life of prayer in the community and through participation in the mission of Jesus.

The Holy Spirit Adoration Sisters (SSpSAP) live a life of striking social dimensions reaching far beyond the confines of the cloister walls which encircle their solitude with Christ. Their contribution towards building a Christ-centered world is to bring the world to Him by way of prayer and self-giving.
